Garage Door Getting Old? Repairs You May Have To Make

Posted on: 29 November 2022

If your garage door is getting older, it may start having problems soon. There are some problems that can be dangerous and cause injury to people and damage to vehicles. Keep reading to learn about two repairs you may have to make soon.

The Garage Door Will Not Close Completely

If your garage door will not close completely there could be something blocking it. Check the floor for any debris or object. If you find anything, remove it and the garage door should close. If you do not find anything blocking the door, the safety sensors may have been damaged. There are sensors at the bottom of the garage door with one on each side. If these sensors become dirty, they will not work. Clean them to see if this is the problem. If the sensors are not dirty you need to replace them. Fortunately, this is something you can do on your own.

The springs may be broken, which is what opens and closes the garage door. Walk into your garage and look up and you will see these springs. They may be broken or have damage which will cause the garage door not to close properly. If you see a problem with the springs, contact a professional to repair or replace them. This is not something you should do on your own.

The Garage Door Will Not Open

If the garage door will not open using the garage door remote, you may need to replace the remote. If you use the switch inside the garage to open it and it will not open the track may not be aligned properly. The tracks are made of metal and part of the springs. If the tracks are not aligned properly or if there is damage to them, the springs cannot work to open and close the garage door. Look at the door to see if it looks crooked. If so, then this is your problem. This is something best left to the professionals to repair. If you have no experience, you could make the problem worse, and working on the tracks can be dangerous.

There could be something in the track that is blocking the door from opening. There is a track on each side of the garage door. Inspect it and if you see anything in the track remove it. These tracks are curved, and you will need a ladder to inspect them. Try to open the garage door and it should open for you.
