3 Reasons Your Garage Door Won't Open

Posted on: 14 January 2021

Have you ever needed to get your vehicle in or out of your garage, but the garage door wouldn't budge? Or, maybe the garage door opened a little bit but wouldn't go all the way up. Either of these scenarios is quite frustrating, especially if you have no idea what the problem is. To help you try to figure it out, here are three possible reasons your garage door won't open.

1. Your Garage Door Opener Needs Attention

When a garage door doesn't open, it doesn't necessarily mean there is a problem with the door. In some cases, your garage door opener is the reason your door won't open. You may simply need to replace the batteries in your garage door opener remote. If the wall-mount on your garage door opener works, then it is probably an issue with your remote.

In some cases, the garage door opener itself might be the problem. This is most likely the case if the garage door moves slower than usual or if the garage door suddenly reverses upon opening.

2. You Need to Replace Your Garage Door Springs

If you're like most homeowners, you probably open and close your garage door three to five a day. Every time you open or close your garage door, your springs receive wear and tear. As such, if you begin to notice you are having trouble opening your garage door, it could be time to replace your springs. You will know it's definitely time to replace the springs when you leave your garage door open halfway and it begins to close on its own.

3. Your Garage Door Is Frozen Shut

If you live in a part of the country that gets cold during the winter months, your garage door might not open because it's frozen to the ground. If there is snow or ice along the bottom of the garage door, you can get it unstuck with a heat gun or with warm water. You don't want to try to kick it open or you will damage your door, which could result in needing garage door repair. You should also not try to open it repeatedly with your garage door opener as this could burn out the motor.

If your garage door won't open, and you're not sure what the problem is, you may need to hire garage door repair services. When making garage door repairs, it's always best to let the professionals handle it, as there are many dangers associated with heavy garage doors.
