Dealing With A Broken Door On Your Garage

Posted on: 18 July 2018

The garage door on your garage can be difficult to deal with if it is damaged in some way. Whether the door is physically damaged or it just does not want to operate properly, fixing the door is not as easy as just changing a hinge or making a quick adjustment. The doors are heavy, the system can be complex, and there are some parts of the door that can cause injury to someone working on them without the right tools.

Assessing the Damage

Before the garage door can be fixed, it is important to determine what is damaged. If you are dealing with a physical panel, each section can be replaced if the panels are still available for the door. Keep in mind, though, that if the middle panel is damaged, the other panels need to come off the door before you can even get to the damaged one. Taking the panels apart is not hard, but getting them back together so they slide smoothly and are properly aligned does take some time, and is probably the most important part of the job. If the damage is in the mechanism, the troubleshooting process can be much harder and the repair may require someone with a lot more experience and skill. In any case, it is a good idea to call a professional to have the door looked at before you try and fix it yourself.

Replacement Versus Repair

There comes a point at which it makes more sense to replace the door than to try and fix one that is very old or does not have parts available for it anymore. If you do decide it makes more sense to replace the door then to repair it, you can choose from a lot of new designs that can really change the way the garage looks. There are also some door manufacturers making doors that look like the older style doors but are much lighter and much easier to open and close. This might be a good time to consider adding a new opener to your door as well, and just like the doors, there are some models on the market that have a lot of features on them beyond just opening and closing the door. Talk to local garage door services about what you have for options before you get started, so that they can be prepared to remove the old door and install the new one when they arrive at your home.
